Recently I have seen a few clients who tell me how difficult they find it to switch off once they get on holiday. For the first few days their mind is racing, worse than it would be if they were at work. This can be so frustrating. For most of us our annual leave is so valuable that we don’t want to waste a moment of it thinking about our work life. We certainly don’t want to be dreaming about work when we have time off.
If you are one of those people who is caught up in work and if you struggle to switch off, then sitting to relax can seem almost impossible. Learning some techniques to train your brain can be an essential part of achieving a balanced life where you can enjoy time off as well as coping better with the pressures of work.
Sometimes rather than resisting the busy nature of our mind we can embrace it by putting it to good use. Next time your mind is hectic and you want to enjoy doing something other than work then try this. You can do it anywhere, lying on a beach, walking, cycling, whatever you do to get away from your daily demands…
1)Imagine a bright ball of light about the size of a football. It takes in different areas of your body as you move your focus and it moves between them bringing warmth and relaxation wherever it hovers.
3) Make the movement of the ball vary in speed as you continue along your way. sometimes fast, sometimes slow.
4) In turn move your focus to these body parts – feet and ankles, abdomen, sola plexus, chest, throat, brow, then 8 inches above your head and then back down.
5) Repeat this little and often and whenever you get a moment to yourself and you will soon be enjoying a more responsive mind.
By training your brain to focus on these different areas of your body you are preparing it for the changing situations that we face in life. You build your ability to adapt to changing circumstances and yet to retain the ability to concentrate. You are teaching your brain to focus where you want it to. You will be able to chose what to focus on… So when your partner offers to get you a drink when you are sitting in the sunshine you won’t miss the offer because your thoughts are back in the officer, and better still you will enjoy every sip of it because your mind will be focussed in the moment!
So rather than missing out on the time with your friends and rather than worrying your way through the special time with your family, get your mind working for you. Don’t let your mind dictate your day, make your time your own.
Come on a Revitalise Day in a beautiful farmhouse in rural Leicestershire to learn how to handle other difficult situations using mindfulness and meditation techniques. Train your mind so that you are equipped for distraction – whatever may arise.
