Last night Noah, Martyn and I went to a halloween party. It was at our friends, Hayley and Steve, who in the village. It was a really good fun night.
Hayley had decorated her house and made such an effort with food and games for the kids. Another friend Phyllida had made a big curry to feed all the hungry grown ups. My small contribution was doing the pass the parcel present. That was a learning curve for me, and a labour of love! I never thought when I started, how big it would be after 13 layers of paper!
After such a nice night I got thinking about what makes a great party….
The most obvious answer for me is that the people make the party. Yet all the decoration and food and games made it really great too. On reflection I think that the thing that makes a party special is the effort put in for others.
Everyone at the party wanted to make sure everyone else had a great night. Whether it was contributing something practical, getting someone a drink or talking to someone standing on their own for a while, everyone was in a caring frame of mind. Everyone contributed to the atmosphere and the enjoyment.
When you look out for others and check that they are having a good time you forget about your own worries and live in the moment. When you live in the moment you enjoy yourself so much more too.
Getting a new perspective on parties can make them so much more enjoyable. Not everyone loves a party but every one can learn to love a party. Handling social situations well is a skill to be learnt and mindfulness is just the right tool to help.
Come on a Revitalise Day to lean techniques to help you live in the moment. No more dreading social occasions, you’ll start to look forward them when you think of the opportunity to be mindful in your behaviour!
