Today I was at work when I got an email about booking a summer holiday. They have been coming through more and more often and the beautiful pictures do tend to lead my thoughts to beaches, mountains and other beautiful places.
Being in constant state of wanting to be elsewhere isn’t really a great way to be. It can leave you feeling dissatisfied with life. We often hear people say ‘don’t wish your life away’ and that can be easy to do if we are always waiting for something we see as better.
Mindfulness is all about enjoying every moment by being present in it. It is all about keeping your focus on the here and now. This means that you focus better on what you are doing and therefore you get more satisfaction from it.
However, don’t think that being mindful means you have to miss out. A really popular technique in mindfulness meditation is to use visualisation as a technique.
In a visualisation you can go to anywhere you like, just by imagining it. By getting yourself into a lovely relaxed state with meditation you can then turn your attention to the place you love to be and you can enjoy being there for a period of time. This means that you can have a free mini vacation, anywhere you like, any time you decide. Perfect!
By choosing when and where you go and by setting aside time to do the exercise you are being mindful. You are giving yourself some time that will make your day better, you are looking after yourself and being kind to yourself in the here and now. You are giving your mind and body some time off. This is at the heart of mindfulness.
