Falling asleep whilst meditating is a really common problem. Don’t beat yourself up about it if it happens to you. It happens to all of us sometimes. Do keep reading though because you might be able to overcome the problem quite easily!
If you fall asleep regularly when you meditate this is a sure sign that you aren’t getting enough sleep at night time. This may sound obvious but many of us plough on in the same routine and fail to address clear signs of tiredness. So if this is you then really try and get to bed half an hour earlier. Try doing a meditation when you lie down in bed to help you drift off more easily.
I have trouble falling to sleep whilst I am meditating if I am lying down. It is a near certainty! So although it is tempting to take 20 minutes in bed getting all cozy under the quilt try to resist. Always make sure you meditate sitting up with your back straight. You need your posture to reflect the way you want your mind to behave -focussed but relaxed.
If you find yourself nodding despite catching up on sleep and despite sitting up wit a straight back then try this. Each time you feel yourself starting to drift imagine a bright light bulb above your head glowing down onto you. The warmth and the brightness will help you to stay awake and focus.
Finally if you are feeling frustrated with yourself remember that sleepiness is not a distraction it is yet another reminder to be mindful.
Come on a Revitalise Day to learn how to overcome other common problems with mindfulness and meditation. A day of meditation and mindfulness could be just what you need to inspire that extra commitment in your practice.
