It can be far too easy to get to the end of the day with a sense of guilt about the things that you haven’t managed to fit in. Two important things to me are fitting in a good meditation and spending some quality, mindful time with by 3 year old, Noah.
When everyday life is busy it can feel as though every second is filled, from the moment you wake to the moment you flop into bed, exhausted! It can seem like there is little room for the things we really want to do and this can leave us with a sense of dissatisfaction as we reach the end of our day.
But beating yourself up and feeling occupied by guilt does nothing to help your state of mind. If you go to sleep feeling negative and mulling this over then a restful sleep can be hard to fall into.
The best approach then is to try your best and to do what you can and to make small efforts to achieve the things that are important to you. The good news is that mindfulness and meditation really can fit into your day, every day, and they can help you to achieve the other things that are important to you.
Meditation is a really simple way to allow your mind to clear and then you see life more clearly. If you only manage two minutes of sitting still and focussing on your breath then that is so much better than doing no meditation at all. You should still feel pleased with your commitment. It will still make a difference. Once you have taken this time life will flow more smoothly. You will see what you want to get done and you will do it.
When you have done your meditation you are more mindful, more aware and more present. Two mindful minutes with your loved ones is so worthwhile and much better than a whole day together where you are pre occupied by everything else going on.
Noah received this lovely bird box as a Christmas Present and over the last week or so we have been painting it, a side at a time. We have probably only spent about 10 minutes a day on it but it really has given us some quality time together. It has also given us a few more really mindful moments.
When we have sat together with our paints we have been quiet and concentrated. We have been focussed on how we wanted to decorate it and what we were doing. We have been right there in the moment together. We have both really enjoyed it and have been pleased with our efforts and on a high with our creativity.
Somehow because we have enjoyed it so much it hasn’t seemed so impossible to find the time. The joint project has given us a shared sense of excitement and because of that we have encourage each other and managed to squeeze little sessions in. Before breakfast has been the best opportunity most days. It really shows how a bit of enthusiasm and some encouragement makes things possible.
So the painting has been mindful in itself, a real chance to sit still, relax and enjoy the stillness. It has also been a great chance to enjoy being mindful together and to make the most of each others company.
In just the same way as you can get excited about a joint project you really can find the same enthusiasm for meditation. Once you get a glimpse of a clearer mind you will be hooked and once you love meditation you will seek out any opportunity to fit it in.
Sessions can be short but can still make such a difference to how you feel. The more you do the more enthusiastic you will feel about it and the more positive you will feel as you reach the end of the day. When you end the day feeing happy then you sleep better and the next day starts on a good note.
Come on a Revitalise Day to experience mindfulness and meditation exercises that will fuel your interest and excitement. One you can see the opportunity to be mindful in everyday life everything will seem a little lighter, you will feel happier and your mind will feel a bit more spacious. Amazing!
