Relationships come in many different forms. Sometimes our interaction with a stranger can make a real difference to our day. Learning to appreciate the happiness that others can bring into our lives is a great way to live in the moment and to be more Mindful.
Today I was out with Noah and we were loading his scooter back into the boot of my car to go home when a man approached and asked whether I had a pen he could borrow. I said I was sorry and that I didn’t, and the man walked off.
I got into my car and looked in the glove box and sure enough there was a biro. The man was about 400 meters away by this time. I decided to be kind and to drive down the road and take him the pen.
He was really chuffed. He thanked me a lot and gave us a big thumbs up as we drove past him again.
It was a tiny act of kindness on my part but I am so sure it made a difference to the man because of the way he reacted. Afterwards Noah and I drove away with a smile on our faces. Just the short interaction with the grateful man made us both happy. Really happy!
Doing something nice for someone you don’t even know holds so much potential happiness. The act is pure generosity because there is no hope of getting anything back in return. This makes it a completely selfless act. So this sort of generosity is perhaps even more rewarding than doing things for those who we know well.
Give it a try today and see how good it feels.
