Today I had one of those working days where things just didn’t go smoothly. Each time I tried to start a new piece of work there was an obstacle, something wrong with it that slowed me down and prevented me from doing my job.
Luckily I meditated before I started work so rather than getting in a flap I had the tools to glide through it. When I looked at the amount of work I achieved during the day I saw I had actually done quite a lot. So despite having moments where I felt very inefficient it actually all worked out ok. There was no need to worry.
So how did mindfulness help?
Sometimes explaining how mindfulness works fails to convince people. Nothing beats experiencing something for yourself. Here are 3 top tips to avoid getting into a flap at work…
1) Always take a deep breath and say something nice to yourself before you start the next piece of work. For me, my next job usually begins with me answering the phone, so as it rings I say to myself “I love my job”. This puts a smile on my face and then I sound happy when I answer the phone, this makes so much difference to me but also to the person on the other end.
2) If you feel your stress levels rising then pause just for a second. You might be convinced that you don’t have time to stop but really, this will pay off. Just stop long enough to label the emotion you are feeling. It might be ‘Anger’ or ‘Frustration’. Labelling it in this way distances you from it. Rather than becoming the anger or the frustration you are simply noticing it. In that moment where you remember to label it you will feel the emotion subside because you have recognised it. It might even bring a smile to your face as you realise you are present in the moment and are still in control.
3) Be interested in your own reactions to things. Really watch where your thoughts go as you get stressed or frustrated. Do you start to blame others? Do you start to blame yourself? Just noticing the way you react will have a huge impact on your thoughts. If you keep this up in time your thoughts will calm and you will think more clearly. Rather than waisting time on thoughts that do nothing to help the situation you will be free to focus.
Mindfulness really can work wonders in the workplace. Rather than getting bogged down you can learn to see the bigger picture, before you know it you will be peacefully gliding through situations that would have got you down in the past. If you have any specific problems at work get in touch, mindfulness often provides a simple yet effective answer. Revitalise Days can run private sessions or group sessions in or out of work. Think about it, it really could be the way forward. More productivity, less worry.
