Last weekend I went away with my friend Cath. On the journey home I decided to have some Harribo sweets with my coffee. A treat, or so I thought!
But at the back of my mind there was a GUILT factor lurking. A bit too much mental chatter about my food choice.
My little boy Noah and I are on an otherwise SUPER healthy diet because I have MS, and he has an increased risk of it. So most of our diet is fruit, veg and fish and totally guilt free. Amazing.
When Noah started school I decided that Harribo were ok as a treat for him when he needed to join in with other children. They are mainly concentrated fruit and sugar, and a time bit of gelatine which I can ignore without too much worry. There is virtually no saturated fat in them and that is the main rule on our diet and the main thing that makes it OK.
However, since he started eating them I also started eating them. Our consumption has crep up over the last few months and we have maybe missed other more healthy snacks in aid of a bag of harribo.
So when Cath saw me eating them she was a bit shocked / horrified. She is used to me being super healthy!
And her reaction really brought home to me that I wasn’t happy with eating the sweets! I knew really that I couldn’t happily justify my choice!
It has played on my mind this week and the Harribo have had to STOP!
So today Noah and I had a chat about it and he agreed that we needed a new plan! We went healthy snack shopping. To be honest he just loved the excitement of the new plan! We bought gorgeous fruit and nuts and some rice cakes too.
What a heathy and delicious day we have had, and not a sweet in sight. We are both on top of the world about it. Feeling great and completely committed to our efforts.
I have heard people say that we know ourselves through others. This is a really good example I think. Until I saw Cath’s reaction to my sweets, I hadn’t recognised my true feelings on it.
Mindfulness is all about getting to know your mind better and your friends can be your most useful tool in doing this. See what you learn about yourself when you interact with your friends. Be open minded and you will be AMAZED!
