Looking back at my holiday photos from last week I realised how happy and relaxed our time in Dartmouth was. Although we have been a couple of times before, the visits have always been about a year apart. That means that when we are there we look at everything with fresh eyes, it always seems new.
We get onto the ferry over the River Dart and admire the scenery and all of the amazing boats. We walk up to the castle and pay so much attention to all the lovely houses nestled into the hillside. We walk the narrow streets in the town with new enthusiasm for all of the gift shops and cafes. Everything seems magical and enchanting. Time flies but we love it. Perfect.
The most amazing thing that strikes me is that when I get home it has exactly the same impact. I come back to our house and love having it to ourselves. I go to see the horses and love being with them in the field and really take my time to enjoy the view and enjoy the experience of being there whilst I do my chores. I hang the washing out and take time for a good look round the garden to see how the vegetables are growing. Everything seems new and I love it all over again. Equally perfect.
Looking at things with fresh eyes is something that mindfulness enables us to do. Rather than taking our environment and our experiences for granted we enjoy each one to the full. Life is never dull when you are mindful. There is always something to keep you in the moment. It might be paying attention to something you are watching or it might simply be paying attention to your breath. What ever it is we are always happiest when we are present in the moment. It cuts our all of that worry about the past and all of the anxiety that can build up about the future.
Give it a try today. Do something you do every day but do it with fresh eyes. It might be your walk to work. It might be taking the dog for a walk. It might be catching the bus. Whatever it is take notice of everything around you. Look at the houses, look at the shops, look at people. Do it as though you are on holiday and you are seeing things for the first time. You will be amazed what you notice and how you forget your own worries as you remember to be interested.
Come on a Revitalise Day to experience many more mindful moments. Learning to be mindful really can make you more happy, come and see how. Our retreat days are held in a beautiful Leicestershire village in a really lovely farmhouse. The day is full of amazing experiences which really will keep you in the moment and give you a real break from everyday life.
