Breakfast is the first meal of the day. For me it’s my favourite. Despite lots of dietary advice to the contrary some people skip this meal to cut down on calories. There are problems with doing this.
Firstly dieticians would say that you need to eat early to get your metabolism working. Also If you wait hours before you eat you will then be starving and chances are you will over eat or make a bad food choice next time you do eat.
Secondly, when we resist something our mind becomes narrow. As we seek to push away the idea of eating and wanting food we start to get tunnel vision. Thoughts associated with food can take over our mind, it becomes the only thing we can think about. Perhaps we have some feelings of guilt regarding the food we ate the day before, perhaps we weighed ourselves that morning and decided we must stop eating! These sorts of thoughts can make us feel down and worried. They certainly won’t spur us on to long term healthy eating.
Craving foods is another common experience. When we really want something it can also take over our thoughts. Perhaps we see someone eating something we really fancy. Different things trigger each of us. It could be seeing people at the fish and chip shop on our way home from work and smelling the food. It could be the box of chocolates some one brought into the office and seeing all of our colleagues tucking in. Sometimes it can feel like our mind just won’t rest till we have had the thing we want.
We need to recognise that thoughts about food are just thoughts. We do not have to act on them. If we can broaden our vision and stop seeing it as a mental food fight we can take the conflict out of our food choices and enjoy the eating experience again.
Mindfulness really helps to broaden the mind. We are able to let thoughts come and go without getting caught up in them. If we can apply this to our thoughts on food then we can make good choices and eat food that ultimately makes us happy.
There is nothing worse that the regret we feel when we have eaten something we wish we hadn’t. There is nothing better than knowing that we have nourished our body and the experiencing our wait bands loosen.
Come on a revitalise day to get inspired by healthy food choices. Stop that food fight and get back to eating for pleasure.
