When Noah and I were packing to come away I decided to pack our drawing kit. A few nice pencils, a sketch pad and a small pack of colouring pencils. The eraser was an essential too of course!
Whilst we have been in Padstow we have developed a bit of a routine. At the end of the day we head for a drink at the pub and we make sure the drawing kit is packed in my hand bag.
Drawing has been a brilliant thing to do together. My mum is with us and she is an artist. It was her who got us into it really. We all sit with a drink and spend an hour or so sketching, doodling, colouring and chatting. Absolutely perfect.
I am not really much of an artist but having Noah is a great excuse to have a go and to shed any embarrassment that I would feel if I was there sketching alone. He also provides me with perfect inspiration. Simple and fun are the main criteria. Today the theme was Octonauts and so he absolutely loved getting me to sketch the characters and then he would carefully colour them in.
At the end of our session we all feel chilled out. We have spent some quality time focussing on what we are doing rather than allowing our minds to race all over the place. We encourage each other, help each other and we love it. We truly are fully present in the moment as we all focus on the pictures we are creating.
You don’t need to be great at drawing in order to enjoy doing it. Your might not want to draw a picture, a pattern or a doodle might be a better way to get into it. A bit like meditation try to think that the reason that you are doing it is to get better at it and to enjoy it as you practise.
Come on a Revitalise Day to get other ideas for finding mindful activities in your day. Often the simplest ideas work the best. Keeping things simple can help to clear your mind. Mindfulness is a great way to create some head space. A day retreat could be just the space you need to get started.
