Distractions – Amazingly Mindful Distractions

4th February 2017 by Alex Leave a Comment

Today I sat upstairs to Meditate and there was quite a lot going on in the house. And also A LOT going on in my mind.

Yesterday I got a new lap top at work and weirdly (because normally this wouldn’t bother me) it must have caused me some anxiety. I only realised because I kept dreaming about work based disasters!

So I knew a Meditation would do me good and get things back in perspective. It was ONLY a new lap top after all, how bad could the disaster be?!

Once I had settled down to Meditate I became very aware of the noise that surrounded me. Some close by and some far away.

I could hear my husband in and out of the back door as he was doing jobs in the garden, and Noah and his cousin were shouting and laughing as they played downstairs.

The thing is, I TOTALLY didn’t mind. I was actually quite pleased.

Bells

The Meditation that I was doing was all about repeating a phrase, or a Mantra. I often use the phrase ‘I am perfect health’ and this is what I was doing.

Because I have MS this always seems to be my main concern, my focus is to stay well. I am full of cold and so a particular focus on my health seemed to be the obvious choice today.

My mind was wandering from the phrase a lot during the length of the meditation, flitting to work, the laptop, my plans for the day.

Each time I heard a noise from downstairs it woke me from my thoughts and I then I came back to the health phrase and back to the Meditation. Each distraction served as a reminder to come back to the present moment.

Meditation in a busy house can be more of a challenge but also it can provide us with more very useful distractions. Rather than getting frustrated with those making noise around you, be thankful to them. They are giving you the tools you need to keep on track.

Each time I brought my mind back to the phrase I was training my brain to focus where I wanted it to. At the same time as training my brain I was creating some head space and enjoying more relaxation. PERFECT!
