Desert Island Disks is one of my absolute favourite radio programmes.
This week I have listened to the interview with Caitlin Moran. She has a column in the Times. I always love reading what she writes, she is SO entertaining. She takes a current topic and puts a whole new spin on it. Her examination of whatever she is focusing on always gives me a new perspective. I LOVE it!
Listening to her talk on the radio was very entertaining, I didn’t want to miss a moment of it. She was very honest in answering questions about her journey in life. She is SO FUNNY.
I always think that listening to people who really interest us is an amazing way to…
practise the mindful skill of listening
to cultivate the skill of compassion.
As I listened to the difficulties and the experiences that Catlin Moran described and the dedication she has to her career and her profession I felt a real admiration for her. She inspired me.
In real life and in conversation I am such a talker. It is one of the things I try to work on every day. To make sure I really listen to others. It is so easy for me to meet with a friend and do all the talking and then come away thinking that I don’t know what their news was.
By listening to others in interviews I think I really train my brain how to listen more effectively. There is no real choice with a radio programme but to listen without talking. At time you may say something out loud but generally my brain just accepts it is there to listen rather than to contribute.
Our minds really are creatures of habit. When we train them to listen to the radio we then become more skilled at listening to those who are around us in real life, those who we truly care about.
Training the brain is best done in an inventive way because it keeps it interesting.
Never feel restricted with how you train your brain, sometimes we get the most benefit from unexpected pleasures. Do what suits you.
If you love something particular on the radio or TV then why not use it to develop yourself in a skill that you feel would help you.
Maybe talking is a challenge for you? If so then listening to others talk about something that interests you could build your confidence in that direction?…
The possibilities are endless.
