So this morning I went for a blood test and then met my friend Rachael for coffee. I had done my meditation first thing and was feeling very relaxed and calm. I and arrived nice and early for my appointment.
As I sat waiting and chatting to a friend it suddenly hit me that I had forgotten to take the forms that I needed for the blood test…aaargh! Panic.
So I had to go home and get the forms and then get back quickly. Luckily I still made the appointment.
Giving blood is never a problem for me. My veins in my arms stand out and so they are really easy for the nurse to see. Sure enough the nurse commented on the veins being easy but then as she got the needle in, no blood came out – al all! Weird.
She waited and still nothing.
She asked if I was dehydrated and I told her that I didn’t think so.
Then she had to try the other arm. Still nothing much happened.
So I closed my eyes and focussed on my breath. I counted my breath, Inhaling for 5 and exhaling for 7.
Sure enough the blood started to come! She finally got enough blood out, job done.
It seems that perhaps the stress of going back for the forms and then being in such a rush had stopped my blood coming out. When I started to worry about the lack of blood this probably just made it worse.
The brilliant thing was that just by relaxing I could make the difference that allowed the blood to flow.
Our breath is such an amazing tool for controlling our body, and our mind. If we are stressed then lots of our bodily functions can shut down. If we can learn to relax our breath then all of our bodily functions start to work properly again.
