After a busy day at work it is all to easy to rush home and then jump straight into the hectic and demanding life that awaits you there.
With social media and internet being so easily accessible, even if you have the house to yourself, the grip of technology and the urge to communicate may have a strong hold!
If this is how it is for you, then by bedtime your mind is likely to be going at full speed. Thinking, worrying, planning, remembering, organising, all sorts! None of this makes for a good nights sleep and you are unlikely to feel ready to go back to work the next day.
By introducing a few mindul moments into that time between work and home you could make a real difference to how you feel, to how much you enjoy your evening, and to how much of a break you have from the demands of work.
Try these top tips to help you leave work at work…
1) When you walk out the door as you leave work take a moment to stop and notice the weather. Perhaps put a reminder on your phone to do this so that you don’t forget. Then check in with yourself, how is your mind – cloudy or clear? Just by taking moment to notice how you are you will benefit and hopefully see some blue sky!
2) Commit to taking 2 minutes to yourself during this in-between period. It could be that you do this on public transport, it could be when you first sit in your car or it could be on your walk home. Make sure you pay attention to your surroundings and to your breath for that time. By being aware of your breath you can tell what state your mind is in. If it is hurried and shallow you need to take another minute!
3) Take your shoes off when you get home. Commit to noticing the feeling of your feet on the floor. Whatever drama meets you as you re enter home life you will stay grounded, there in the moment rather than being swept away by whatever is going on.
Making a break between your working day and the rest of your life means that the stresses don’t blur into one and you benefit from a fresh start.
If you commit to taking a few small steps to create some separation between the parts of your day you will be amazed at how much more you enjoy your time at home. When you return to work the next day things will be back in perspective, you will look at everything with fresh eyes. Making sure you have some quality time away is so important.
