Today I read a Twitter blog that said that to be Mindful we need to give up trying to be the best at everything.
It struck a real chord with me. I took a quick look back through my day and I realised that I had already worried about not being the best at all sorts of things – and it was only early!
I thought about my performance at work and realised that I worried about not being as fast as others at the same job.
I had worried about how I came across to someone I had dealt with earlier in the day and whether they thought I was the most friendly and efficient lawyer they had spoken to.
I had even compared my reversing skills to anther person I saw reversing into a parking space, was I better at it than them!?
So the realisation hit that often my mental chatter is about whether I am the best at things. I judge myself and compare myself a lot.
As soon as I noticed this tendency then something changed. On a theoretical level I realised there was absolutely no point worrying about these thoughts. No one can be the best at everything and nor should we try. Enjoying life is so much more important.
Mindfulness is all about getting to know your Mind. Even when you have been practising for a long time you learn new things about yourself. Once you get more understanding then things fall into place, you see more clearly and life becomes a little lighter.
