Today I had a hospital appointment. Whilst we were waiting to go in Noah absolutely loved playing with the toys in the waiting room.
He was absolutely absorbed by them. The giant building blocks and the space ship kept him occupied with barely any input from myself or Martyn. It was lovely to watch him play so happily.
It got me thinking about how content he seemed and what a contrast this was to many of the anxious people waiting for appointments.
If only we could all be as mentally settled as a child with a new toy to play with!
well perhaps we can…
Being present in the moment is a great way to overcome our natural anxiety.
Most anxiety comes from worries that are related to things that have already happened or things that we think are going to happen.
Through Mindfulness we can train our brains to be present in the moment more often rather than constantly battling with a worrying mind.
This sounds great in practise but how to begin?
Well, just a short period of brain training each day is a great way to get started. The great news is you can do it anywhere, even in a waiting room!
Sit upright in a chair.
Start to watch the rising and falling sensation that comes with your breath.
If you find this difficult then put your hand on your tummy and feel the rising and falling as it connects with your hand.
Each time your mind wanders bring it back to that sensation.
In that moment when you are feeling the rising and falling you are present in the moment.
When your mind is occupied by the sensation of your breath then there is no room for worry.
The more often you do this the better you will get at it. This means that when moments of anxiety strike you will have the perfect tool to calm yourself.
