This morning Noah and I had our annual check up at the dentist. I am not usually nervous about the dentist experience but I do have a slight apprehension about the news I will receive. Will he say my teeth are in good order? Will he think I have looked after them since the last visit?!
Since having had Noah this apprehension has doubled. I have heard so many stories of children having decay and cavities and so much criticism thrown at parents in these cases. What if that happens to me!!?
In the last couple of months Noah has discovered the world of Haribo. He is on my special diet to prevent MS and so sweet treats have really been just fruit in the past. But starting school meant that I felt that I needed him to be able to have some sweets that other kids think are ‘cool’. I also want him to feel that he can join in.
Haribo seem like a good option. There is no fat in them which is the most important thing for us. There is sugar obviously, and concentrated fruit.
So at the back of my worrying mind as we drove to the appointment was whether the sweets would have caused a difference to his usual glowing report.
Thankfully not! Phew. We both got signed off for another year. No action needed.
For me one of my biggest areas of anxiety is getting our diet right. I want it to be balanced, good for my MS and Noah’s general health and still tasty and interesting so that Noah sticks with it into adulthood.
I know that at times I have to let him try things for himself and to have things that I might not. Mindfulness helps me to deal with this.
It means that I can make a clear decision and stick to it. It also means that I can communicate with Noah appropriately so that he understands what we do and why. It also means that when worries do creep in I have some exercises to use to let my mind calm down and settle.
The result is that at the moment we are both happy with what we do, we are healthy, we have some treats and our teeth are ok!
Mindfulness can help us to overcome all sorts of challenges. If you have something you need to settle in your life it could be a great way to move forward.
