There is a well known Mindfulness exercise often taught to beginners to allow them to experience the benefit of total concentration and focus. A raisin is usually used but I was taught the exercise with a strawberry and I think this works better.
Give this a try even if you have done it before – each time you will be amazed by the intensity of the experience, especially if you use a piece of fresh fruit like a strawberry.
Firstly hold the fruit in your hand, look at it, really look at it, notice how amazing the make up of the fruit is. The texture of the skin, the seeds, take in the beauty of it.
Next, sniff it, take some time to really breath in the scent.
Then feel it with you fingers, notice the texture.
Then move it to your lips and feel the sensation of the fruit there.
Finally, very slowly, allow yourself to take a bite and then let the fruit sit on your tongue and experience the sensation as the flavour makes your taste buds tingle.
If you really enter into the exercise it can be such an intense experience. It is so rare that we take this much time and concentration in relation to some thing we eat. You will enjoy this one piece of fruit more than you have ever enjoyed it before – a sure bet.
So what if you could apply this to other areas of your life? You could renew so many experiences and get so much more out of them.
Think about your relationships. You can transfer the skill of concentration and focus in so many ways.
It may well inspire you to pay more attention to your love life. Again slow things down rather than rushing in. Pay a little more attention to the person you love and value. Go through the strawberry steps. Learn to hold back, just a little, so that you savour the moment and get much more from it. Enjoy your partner and feel the intensity in just the same way as you did with the fruit. Mindful but also mind-blowing! Try it.
