Yesterday I saw my friend for a drink after work. She wants to get fit and was asking me the best way to do this because she knows I am a regular runner. Running is something she is keen to bring into her work outs.
I always rave about running. It is so cheap and easy and such a great way to get some exercise into your day without it taking up too much time. I go most mornings.
So my advice was to mix it up. If you do the same run every day your body gets used to it and you no longer get fitter from doing it. I find that a speed session once a week helps to keep my running a challenge. I tend to go to our local cricket field and run as fast as I can between the site screens or as fast as I can for one circuit at a time, the session usually takes about 30 minutes and then I feel great for the rest of the day.
The day after a speed session I will make sure I take it easy and go for a steady run, not pushing the speed too much just enjoying my ability to keep going and enjoy the sights and sounds as I go. Another day during the week I will do hill work. Again this is great for increasing fitness and also building strength.
This is one of my favourite hills to use…
It’s not far from my house and in lovely countryside but you can do it anywhere. I start at the footpath sign and finish at the tree at the top and then jog back down to recover. I normally do 4 repeats of this before jogging home.
By adding variety into my running I stay interested in it. My motivation stays strong because I look forward to doing something different. I always get the feel good factor when I do fitness sessions because I always push myself just a little bit more. Equally on my recovery days I feel pleased that I have allowed my body to recover.
As I was telling my friend about the benefits of this type of exercise routine I realised that many of the same benefits apply to meditation…
It is cheap and easy to do.
You can do it anywhere.
If you enjoy it you do it more often.
It exercises our brain in the same way that running exercises our body.
When we do a session in the morning then we feel great all day!
