Setting an intention in the morning is a great way to have a better day.
‘To do’ lists are quite a common way to try and be more productive. Sometimes I use them but I do find that setting a long list of tasks can increase my anxiety levels.
Today I had a hectic day, writing a list of all the things I had to get done would simply have made me worry and stress.
In reality I knew I would get everything done, the anxiety wasn’t necessary! I had planned it, I knew it would work out fine. Treated with the wrong approach my overactive mind could very easily make my plans into a catastrophe!
For me a better way is to set an intention about how I want to be. So today I had 2 Mindfulness sessions with a total of 25 people attending. This morning when I set my intention it was nothing to do with timing or organisation, it was much better. My real intention was to help others.
How I set my intention…
When I sat to do my morning meditation I thought of a time when I felt pleased with myself, when I felt good for they way I had acted. I recently did a 6 week Mindfulness course for a lovely lady who was expecting her first baby.
Afterwards she sent me an amazing email thanking me for everything I had done for her and telling me how the techniques that we used really got her through the birth.
When I read the email for the first time it made me smile. When I remembered receiving it whilst I was in my meditation it made me smile all over again!
So I held this memory, that made me smile, in my attention. Over time my mind wandered to other things and then when I noticed I brought it back to this memory and then it made me smile again. I made myself feel good and in doing so I inspired and motivated myself. This meant that I kept that intention to help others, going all day long!
Give it a go…
Think of a time when you have been pleased with the way you acted, find a memory that makes you smile and feel good.
Recreate that feeling by remembering the way it felt. Try not to get lost in thought by analysing the memory.
Set your intention to behave in the same way.
