Today I ran a session about Clear Thinking as part of a Resilience course. Much of the course was Meditation based.
Relaxation really is the key to clear thinking so Meditation is the perfect tool to work with. A relaxed mind can function so much more effectively.
Think back to those times when you are relaxed in bed or enjoying a shower and the best idea EVER pops in – well that’s why, our brains need some space to work at their best. When we are too crowded by thoughts they get into trouble and get confused.
Although most of us know we need to relax more getting to that stage can be a challenge. As human beings we have so many thoughts running through our minds that it is totally normal to be swept away in thought.
Scientists have shown that we are lost in thought for up to 50% of our time. Half of our lives!!!
Time for action! Time for a training plan….
Focusing on your breath and the rising and falling sensation that comes with it is a great relaxation tool. Totally simple and really effective. Give it a go right now.
Training your brain to come back to the here and now gradually cuts down the number of thoughts and allows your mind to quieten.
Each time your mind wanders away from your breath bring it back into focus again. This is an active way of rewiring your brain and strengthening your ability to stay in one place.
If you feel like taking it further then read on…
Labelling (see below) your thoughts and feelings as they arise and distract you is a great way of acknowledging them and then being able to move on. You can then go back to the breath, no need to dwell or get lost in thinking.
So if you fancy a go sit up straight and take a few deep breaths.
Once your breath returns to normal then watch and see if you can notice the rising and falling sensation. Closing your eyes will make you more perceptive of this.
Each time your mind gets drawn away label the distraction as a Thought or Feeling and then go back to the breath.
After just a few minutes you will have cleared some super valuable head space!
Post meditation your mind should be at it’s best – relaxed and ready to do what you need it to do. Perfect!
