If you don’t meditate then you are probably not very aware of just how many thoughts go through your head every single minute. Absolutely loads!
Try sitting still with your eyes closed for just 2 minutes and then reflect on all of the different thoughts that you had during that period. It can be quite a shock when you first realise quite how many there were and quite how lost in thought you were.
Be aware that having millions of thoughts rushing through your mind is completely normal. It happens to all of us, it is just the way the human mind works.
We all tend to rush around in our daily lives and so our minds do the same. The trouble is that they don’t just stop when we want them to. Excess thought traffic can cause us anxiety and can stop us focussing on, and enjoying, the here and now.
All is not lost!
Mindfulness and meditation can help to give you back a bit of headspace!
Here re 3 top tips to get you on your way to a more chilled out mind…
1) Try sitting still for a short period. Just by closing your eyes and staying still for a little while your thoughts will gradually slow down and settle.
2) Be reassured that you can only have one thought at a time. If your mind keeps nipping off to think about something you would rather it didn’t then try returning your attention to something you do want to think about. Do this repeatedly but be gentle with yourself each time you move your focus and never tell yourself off.
3) If diverting your attention doesn’t seem to do the trick then try the opposite. Really commit to thinking about the thing you have been trying to avoid. Keep taking your attention back to it. This may seem like madness at first but your thoughts will soon run out of steam and soon enough that difficult thought will have vanished as a priority in your thinking pattern. Amazing.
