Most of us go through most of our days on autopilot, consumed by our own internal world. This means we miss out on what’s really going on in our world.
If you can learn to be present in the moment life seems so much lighter, less worrying leaves more room for fun, happiness and enjoyment.
Check out these three easy ways to be more present in the moment…
1) Put up a post it note somewhere convenient to remind you to check in with yourself. I’ve got this one on my fridge at the moment. It is to remind me to think about what is going on inside my head, and what is going on in the world around me. Every time I go to the fridge I remember to notice the difference between the two.
2) Set a few reminders on your phone to help you to be mindful. I like to have one set for mid morning and one for mid afternoon. It simply says ‘breath’. When I see it I notice how my breath is, fast and shallow? Then I need to sit up straight and take a few deep breaths. Long and steady?, I can congratulate myself on keeping my cool!
3) Each time you go outside try to notice the weather. This is a really good way to pay attention to your surroundings and to keep yourself connected to what is going on around you. At the same time notice your state of mind. Awareness makes all the difference to how you feel. Once you acknowledge how you are feeling the intensity will fade.
